Royal Doulton Porcelain Marks

While founded back in 1793, the company that was to become associated with the term "Royal Doulton" was originally negaged in the production of industrial porcelain, such as tiles and storage containers for chemicals. Only after the passing of generations and the dissolution and reincarnation of the company, did Royal Doulton porcelain marks appear in 1872 on its decorative and dinnerware pieces. The Royal Doulton mark has been used continuously since 1902 until the present.

From 1913 until 1940, figurines created by artist Harry Nixon included an "HN Number". After that, sets of numbers were given to denote the various creators. From 1928 up until 1954, numbers to the right of the crown on the Royal Doulton porcelain marks could be added to the year 1927 to give the year of manufacture of the current item. It was after 1920 that the image of a lion also accompanies the crown in the Royal Doulton porcelain marks.
