The Frankenthal Porcelain Manufactory, named for its Rhineland German hometown, operated from 1755 until 1799. Founded by Paul-Anton Hannong, the Frankenthal Porcelain Factory was operated only 7 years by him and his feuding sons, Joseph and Peter. The two brothers' ongoing disputes caused their patron, Elector Carl Theodor of Bavaria, to take over the opeeration in 1762.
Hannong had immigrated to Frankenthal to open the factory after being excluded from his earlier base of operation in Strasbourg due the the monopoly granted by French King Louis XVI to Sevres porcelain. To view Frankenthal porcelain marks, click here.
Hannong was the first French artisan to discover the means of producing hard-paste porcelain. His formula or arcanum differed somewhat from that at Meissen, producing a less-white version. Pieces were marked with a blue underglaze.
